South Wellington
Tuesday 24 February 2026
I have done this walk a few times, starting at the kunanyi summit to the bush west of Smiths Monument then to ascend to the extensive South Wellington plateau; however, as Neville commented, it seems harder now. The ascent from the shelf to South Wellington plateau also seemed rockier than before.
One of the reasons for visiting was to attempt to find a distinctive rock but it was not sighted nor any of the Foxgloves that were spotted there. A native plant (Tetracarpaea tasmannica - delicate laurel) was seen that was new to us.
The inward journey took 2:40 for 4.6k, excluding morning break whilst the return took almost the same but over a slightly shorter distance of 4.3k In all it was 5:20 for the 9k walk with an elapsed time of 6:35.
