Mount Oakleigh
Sunday 13 to Tuesday 15 October 2024
Quite a tough climb to park boundary sign then still a bit to ascend from the boundary to Lake Price followed by a gentle down to Wurragarra Creek finding the pad up to the Oakleigh plateau needed close scrutiny as it was quite overgrown as it ascended 500m followed by a short sharp up to the plateau then over coral fern and sphagnum; somewhat hard walking. We passed a nice campsite behind pencil pines at the edge of tarn of islands but kept on to the far se corner to a spot I had previously noticed. It was close to a rocky outcrop with views to Pelion Range and beyond.
The day to Mount Oakleigh, not unexpectedly, took longer than previous occasions. There were a number of pools and tarns and Pencil pines along with several view points to the surrounding mountains. Nevertheless, it was scrubby in parts and with swaths of uneven surface requiring extra effort, especially over the spongy stuff. In all it took us nearly 91/2 hours for the day. It was finished off by a surprise of pudding and custard courtesy of Neville.
Retracing the inward journey back to the car, being basically downhill, took less effort, except the 1 kilometre last section after the descent seemed to take a long 19 minutes.
We had three days of delightful weather especially the second and third where blue skies dominated.
