kunanyi Huts and Rock Feature

 Tuesday 11 March 2025

This walk visited several hut sites on the mountain, including a couple for the first time for most in the party. On the way we went to a rock feature that was near the old New Town Red Paint Track. Neville took us to the hut sites and Alan the rock feature.

The two main routes to the Pinnacle (Cascade and New Town routes) were described again in 187829; the former leading via the Finger-post track and the latter running from Jonathan Greenā€™s to the saw pits (Junction Cabin area), and thence along the Black Ball (later New Town Red Paint?) Track to the top of the tree line; after this, the track was marked with stakes and cairns to the Pinnacle.           A Time Line For The Track Network of kunanyi/Mount Wellington by Maria Grist    p7

New Town Red Paint Track. In 1913116 the New Town Track was in good condition but roughish especially at the top where it was possible to get lost. A section at the top was therefore splashed with red paint to clarify the route, in a similar manner to Haywoodā€™s Red Paint Track. This section became known as the New Town Red Paint Track, and it met up with Haywoodā€™s Track at the top.    A Time Line For The Track Network of kunanyi/Mount Wellington by Maria Grist    p34
