Montagu Thumbs Loop

 Tuesday 21 October 2025

Quite a few years ago I walked up an old fire trail from Misty Hill Road to the saddle with Montagu Thumbs and on the way we noticed a cut track which was followed for a while to see where it went.  Then some years later I received a GPX track for the route, showing it linking to where the Cathedral Rock track leaves from Andersons Road.

After a few false leads we picked up an old track and followed it up to reach a spot on Grundys Creek.  From there a straight line was made to a known waypoint, but in hindsight it would have been better to continue up the old track to be more at the level of that waypoint.

Once on the cut track it was much clearer and wider than my memory of it, but the ascent on the Old Montagu Fire Trail certainly was longer and steeper than I thought.

On the way down the track below Cathedral Rock a cut track was known to head west and we think it may go all the way to reach Grundys Creek and connect to the track we were on earlier in the day.    A future venture along it is very tempting to find out if this supposition is correct.  However, I have no desire to continue on up the Old Montagu firetrail with all the exertion that entails.

The walk was 14.27k and took 7:52
