Missing in The Labyrinth

Tuesday 28 - Thursday 30 October 2025

Well not lost but Alan injured a leg making it painful and restricted what he could do, and I almost lost the sole of my boot, so only Michael managed to walk all the way to The Labyrinth. Alan spent the day wandering up Pine Valley.   I was sitting having a drink on The Parthenon when I noticed the sole of my boot was only attached at the toe.  Taping the boot got me back to camp and to the ferry next day, to my great relief.

Crossing the log to the campsite had me feeling nervous and quite tentative.  I got a pole to help but still made a misstep at the end of the crossing and had to grab at the end of the log together with help from Michael.   I became better at it following our several unavoidable crossings especially when shuffling over with feet sideways to the log.

The weather for the whole trip was ideal after many days of less than ideal weather which reasserted itself fairly soon after we got back.   It was still a good walk despite the setbacks.  I have noticed over many years that pack carrying on a decent built track is much more tiring than walking through the bush, and I was pleased to get it off my back at Narcissus.

My boots are Asolo and only 8 years old and the cobbler said even if he repaired them, if I continue to wear them in wet muddy conditions the sole would again come off.
